Fresh off the basketball court, the Nike KD Trey 5 X is one of the latest from the brand to include in our review section. The KD Trey series made its debut in 2012, four years after Kevin Durant had his first shoe with Nike come out. Much like the Giannis Immortality and the LeBron Witness this is the take down version of the main series which tends to get more expensive every year. Even if it’s considered a more budget friendly basketball shoe this model has evolved over the years and has become a favorite court sneaker for many. The 10th iteration of the KD Trey series keeps many of the elements from the previous version while adding a midfoot strap, similar to the one we’ve seen at the KD 14 model.

How They Fit

The Nike KD Trey 5 X pair we got was the one in black, gray, white and volt, one that we managed to get on sale in the summer of 2023. They come in the KD customized black box we’ve gotten accustomed to with all Kevin’s Durant Shoes. At a first look the shoes look very stylish and quite solid, yet if you’re used to the more expensive models the upper materials may feel a bit cheap. They fit true to size with a roomy toebox and a quite flexible upper material. If you need to check our Nike size you can do it here. They do not need any break in period and they feel very comfortable from the get go. Size 12 weights 14.7oz which is pretty standard for a mid top sneaker.

Upper

The upper of the Nike KD Trey 5 X features a seamless mesh upper that is pretty durable and provides good breathability. Nike made some modifications in the heel area where the extra cushion is covered by a second type of mesh. The most obvious change at this model is the midfoot strap which adds more stability to the shoe and a more flexible fit. Much like at many other models from Nike the shoe excels in branding and logos which distract from the quality of the materials which are not premium.

Sole Unit

In terms of the sole unit the Nike KD Trey 5 X is pretty much identical to version 9. In 2022 Nike added a rectangular Zoom unit in the forefront which was a welcome addition to the Renew foam that makes up the rest of the shoe. This foam that we’ve also see at the Renew Ride 3 offers a good balance of cushion and stability. The Zoom unit adds some nice bounce with every step and superior responsiveness to the shoe, something that players in all positions surely appreciate. What stood out for us while doing this Nike KD Trey 5 X review is the smooth heel to toe transition of the shoe along with its superior traction. The sneakers feature a heat map patterned outsole with mid size grooves that do a great job both indoors and outdoors. The shoe does not feature any torsion plate in the midfoot which may be a drawback for many more advanced players.
